This week we have all been presented with the idea of a new and unexpectedly positive future. 

 

David Cameron and Nick Clegg have torn up the rule book and shown the world that it is possible to change attitudes and ideas, hearts and minds, within a very short time.

 

The coalition may not last. But that does not matter. It is definitely going to be worth a try.

 

 

What we have seen is a wonderful example of how to live.

 

These two men have shown us that pragmatism and flexibility and working together with the brilliant minds surrounding them, can offer a way forward that, just a week ago, even the most positive amongst us would have had difficulty in believing could be achieved.

 

 

One of my favourite sayings is from the poet Rumi: Out beyond ideas of right and wrong, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.

 

On Wednesday we saw just that – even down to the meeting taking place in the Downing Street garden.

 

In the next few years we have to seek more ways to work collaboratively with one another. 

 

We have to learn greater tolerance of our differences and how we might use those differences to come together both graciously and ferociously, to resolve challenges. 

 

 

Think of problems that you want to solve. Who do you need to work with to resolve them? How might you do things differently?

 

Which ideas of yours are fixed? What assumptions do you make – have you always made – which might now be open to question and re-thinking?

 

We are living in very volatile times with unexpected events happening almost daily. 

 

If we get used to feeling confident about our ability to make good decisions and move forward in the world with positive self-belief, we shall no longer live in fear of the unknown that lies ahead.
