Multi-Working Will Become the Norm
Posted on: Monday, February 08, 2010

NEWSLETTER  2 – February 2010
London Workshop on Sunday 7th March 2010
Judy will be giving a half-day workshop in London entitled "Reinvent Your Business for Changing Times" on Sunday March 7th 2010 at 14.00 in partnership with Inspired Entrepreneurs.
Vitality Show presentation on Friday 19th March 2010
Judy will be talking on the subject of “Growing Your Business Through Difficult Times” at the Vitality Show which runs from 18th – 21st March 2010 at Earls Court.
Multi-Working will become the Norm
Last month I spoke at a business network for entrepreneurs and holistic practitioners in North London.
Before my presentation, members of the network introduced themselves to one another and talked briefly about their working lives.
What was particularly striking for me was how many people are now earning their living by doing two or more different kinds of work.
A Major Future Trend
I see this as a major trend for the future.
As I have written in previous newsletters, we are seeing large companies trimming costs as much as they can. Many organisations have talented conscientious skilled workers on their staff. But they don’t need their skills every day of the year. So they are cutting back on full-time employees and re-hiring the same staff on a part-time basis.
Those people who have had their contract redesigned now have several spare days in every month. Once they have got over the shock of their change in status, many are realising what a wonderful opportunity this has become for them.
New Patterns of Earning Money in the Workplace

Since new technology changed the face of the workplace in the mid-1990s, people have been complaining that they do not have enough time.
So employees who have been let go, now have many options as to how they might use their new-found leisure hours.
They can – if they are in a sufficiently prosperous financial situation – use their additional time to catch up on all the tasks and enjoyable activities which they have been wanting to do but which they have had no energy for at the end of a week’s work.
They can use their days off to fulfil their creative ambitions and develop their own form of art which they have never previously been able to fit in to their busy schedules.
They can go to classes and study new skills.
They can network to find more business in their area of expertise and they can build up a larger roster of clients who will pay for what they do.
Or they can develop an entirely new line of work – or more than one – which can run alongside what they are already doing.
It is hard for most people, who are not already doing so, to imagine a time when they might be living like this. But if you look around, you will see many people who were in full employment a year or two ago, who have now begun to develop an entirely new set of paid activities.
Create Your Own Plan B
If you are currently in full-time employment, you need to be aware of this new trend. And begin to think what you might do if you had more time for yourself – but less regular money coming in.
Everyone needs to have a plan B in their mind as no one knows when their company might decide to down-size them, or when their own clients’ plans might change.
If you don’t see change as a negative experience and can look forward to it positively, you may find that being downsized is the best thing that has ever happened to you.
Change is exciting – and it is scary. But it is definitely a sign of the times we live in which I believe will continue to be very volatile for many months to come.
