NOVEMBER IS A BUSY MONTH
November is usually a very busy month.
Consumers are planning and spending in preparation for the Christmas and New Year break.
Businesses are hoping for their best ever month. Sometimes November is just as good as December because the trading period is several days longer.
Everyone is under pressure.
Why do we behave like this?
How much does it all really matter?
Businesses need to make profits in order to pay their workers at the end of the month.
But the workers often put themselves under the same pressure as if they were running a business.
People’s lives are so complex
Many people’s lives are so complicated. They are filled with pressure of work and of the additional stress of commuting to their workplace if they have long journeys.
At home, if they have families, there are a myriad of arrangements to make and dozens of small things to remember to do.
And on top of all of this, there is the constant paperwork required of every householder which, although you can do much of it online, is nevertheless time-consuming and complex.
We All Run Around So Much
Some time ago there was a crisis at the garage pumps. Suddenly petrol was in short supply. For a few days people used their cars only for journeys that were absolutely essential.
And earlier this year we had that wonderful day in many parts of England where everyone was snowed in and simply went out to play.
For a few days it was possible to stay at home and no one rushed around.
People relaxed and spent some time with their families. Families ate meals together, watched the same tv programme and played cards and board games. People caught up with themselves. They relaxed and ‘chilled’ – simply because there was no alternative.
It was an unexpected break and everyone felt better for it afterwards.
How Much of What We Do is Really Important
It’s very easy to get caught up in thinking all the arrangements we make and all the things we have to do are important.
Some of them are.
But others are simply tasks that we do because we have always done them in this way.
Or because we think we ‘should’ do them.
Take Time to Think About It All
November is a good time to take stock of all the things you think you need to do in the next 7 weeks.
Maybe you don’t have to do them all.
Maybe you don’t have to cook more than one choice for your family
at dinner.
Maybe you don’t have to make arrangements to go for a drink after work every night.
Maybe your world won’t fall to pieces if your child misses a birthday party of a classmate he doesn’t really like which is an hour’s round trip there and back – twice.
Maybe you don’t have to spend all that time searching for perfect birthday and Christmas presents. Maybe you could use the money to have a day out together and give yourselves wonderful memories to treasure.
Most important of all, take the time to question why you are doing all the things that you are doing.
Maybe you don’t need to do half of them.
How Much of What You Do is to Please Others
Maybe you are only doing some of these things in order to please other people who won’t appreciate your efforts anyway.
Only you know how important each individual task is.
But the important thing is to take the time to question.
