Enjoying the Unexpected
Regular readers of this newsletter will know that I am interested in new ideas, new experiences and new ways of earning money which might even be so enjoyable that they don’t feel like work.
Last week I was unexpectedly introduced to a fabulous new form of creativity. I met up with Duncan Bridgeman who, with his partner, Jamie Catto, has created two very original and new forms of film.
Creativity on a Grand Scale
Duncan and Jamie both have a background in the music business. Duncan had never made a film but a few years ago, he and Jamie took off for several months to travel to over 50 locations throughout the globe. They wanted to explore through music and film the complexities of human nature on a global scale and their work reveals how we are all connected to one another through our creativity, beliefs and shared experiences which include money, sex, death and spirituality.
Duncan and Jamie interviewed famous well-known people who had interesting things to say about how we live now and how we might want to change our lives for the better. They created an original work of art by interspersing words and music and film in a way which is both truly enlightened and wonderfully original.
Different Meaning for Everyone
I was with a group of friends when I watched some tracks from the films (which have been designed to be viewed as a whole or in small chunks). All of us were fascinated and each one of us took away a different message. We also felt that, if we watched the films on different days or at different periods in our lives, then each time we would respond to something different amongst all the images and the messages that the films convey.
Here is the link on Bombardment from Duncan and Jamie’s first film, One Giant Leap which was nominated for a Double Grammy Award and features contributions from Dennis Hopper, Kurt Vonnegut, Michael Stipe, Anita Roddick and many others. Their second film, What About Me? Has been released more recently and includes contributions from Stephen Fry and Eckhardt Tolle.
Not Everyone Gets It
The films, like all powerful art, will not necessarily be to everyone’s taste. But if you take the time to think about some of the words and the lyrics, and if you observe the reactions and responses that some of the clips evoke in you, then you will have the opportunity to learn more about yourself. And the better that each one of us understands ourselves and how we tolerate and judge people and situations, the wiser we become.
Change Can Be Exciting
I am giving a talk in central London on September 17th on future trends and changes that are taking place all around us. One area where there is always something new to talk about is how we enjoy our leisure time. Most people love going to new films, plays or exhibitions, trying new restaurants, reading the latest books, visiting foreign cities and doing interesting things they have never done before.
Whether your life is good at the moment, or whether there is some anxiety in it, if you can view many of the changes that are gradually taking place all around us as exciting pleasurable events, then suddenly you can experience your life through a new prism. Each day becomes more fun and rewarding as you have the opportunity to explore new sights, sounds, relationships with people and objects and unexpected experiences.
