Yesterday I was invited to a very interesting conference and debate about being an entrepreneur which was held at the House of Lords.
Women from a wide range of business sectors and professions met together to seek practical and creative solutions to help all entrepreneurs.
There was a tremendous buzz of energy in the room.
A lot of ideas were discussed and some resolutions made and these will be passed on to Parliament via the involvement of leading politicians.
Teresa May was one of the keynote speakers. She made the point that women need to have more self-belief and confidence in themselves and their abilities.
Men take more risks.
Men will apply for a job if they have only half the skills required.
Men will go out on a limb and take more chances with the direction of their lives.
This is a well-worn theme but Teresa is right.
Women do need to take more risks in the corporate world and in business.
When I mean risks, I don’t mean doing anything foolhardy.
I mean that more women need to stand up and be counted.
Vaira Vike-Freiberga, the Latvian candidate for the EU presidency, has shown us an excellent example of how to do it in this morning’s headlines.
Women need to put themselves forward for the positions they want to achieve.
Women can’t wait for someone to suggest they put themselves forward.
Women must do it themselves.
We all need to recognise our abilities, skills and talents and find a way to let the world know we have them.
Then we shall achieve the results we yearn for.
Entrepreneur of the Year Sara Murray made a good point when she told us to aspire to achieve our mother’s expectations as they will probably be higher than our own!
