We have to Become Better Guardians of the Earth

Posted by Judy Piatkus in The Planet

We are at the beginning of a massive shift in values.

We are going to see major changes in how we experience our daily lives over the next few years.

At some level – unless we are in complete denial – we know that the way of life that we lead in the West cannot be sustained.

Supplies of oil are gradually running out.

And nations do not always want to do business with some of the countries who do have access to oil.

What the terrible tragedy of the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico is showing us loud and clear, is that our society is not sufficiently technologically skilled and knowledgeable to search for it under the sea.

In the years ahead I have no doubt that we will create and discover new forms of green energy which will enable us to replace our dependency on oil.

But until we do that, and until there is enough new energy, we have to start cutting back.

We have to think every day about how we use the earth’s resources.

All our actions much be considered – whatever we buy, whatever choices we make, whatever we consume and recycle or throw away.

Since 2005 we have come a long way very fast.  In that year the environment was still only a marginal cause.

Now new generations of schoolchildren are learning more every day and will show their olders how to become better guardians of the earth.

But we cannot wait even for that.

All of us must start today to think about how we live, what we use and how to husband our resources more carefully.

The time for delay is past and change is coming upon us like an incoming  tide.
